The practice

PdJ Consulting is a boutique commercial consultancy founded in September 2025 and built entirely on referrals within the STM network. Every client from the first year has been retained, with each engagement renewed or extended. The practice works internationally, with engagements running across Europe, the UK, the US and APAC. The test is always whether the ideas developed with clients actually work in practice: in the labs, the libraries, the classrooms and the universities. PdJ Consulting is an STM Associate Member.

The practice works with STM publishers, medical societies, medical education companies, educational content organisations and the service and technology partners around them. Education runs through all of it: medical education, EdTech and how learning and teaching are evolving, and the STM and research world as the ultimate global classroom.

Services and specialisms

Partnership building and commercialisation

The through-line of the practice: partnership identification, negotiation, validation and operationalisation, from first conversation to signed commercial construct. Recent work spans licensing arrangements, clinical data partnerships and channel partnerships, on both sides of the table.

Rights and AI licensing

How AI is reshaping licensing for publishers and rightsholders: collective licensing, content provenance and the commercial models that follow.

Go-to-market, pricing and commercial operations

For go-to-market work, it's critical that all players on the client side are involved: leadership, marketing, product and sales as a minimum. Any untested assumption needs validation with customers, users or both. Setting up those pilots and interviews is a core element of the practice.

Work typically takes one of these shapes:

Partner programme development

From partner identification and rightsholder onboarding to commercial construct design and the pricing mechanics behind partner deals.

Deal and partnership assessment

Assessing what current and historical agreements deliver, where value sits, and what the commercial options are for the next phase.

Pricing and commercial models

Pricing architecture for specialist content and data assets: use-case pricing, enterprise constructs and benchmarking against market practice.

Market validation and strategy research

Structured interview programmes with senior market participants, competitive landscaping and board-level recommendations.

How engagements work

Discrete briefs deliver a bounded output in four to six weeks: a benchmark, a commercial construct, a market map or a framework, at a fixed fee agreed upfront.

Retained advisory runs a set number of days per month against agreed workstreams, with weekly check-ins and deliverables at set milestones, typically three to six months and renewable.

Project-embedded support places dedicated analysis, stakeholder work and negotiation support inside a sponsored project, reporting to the project sponsor.

Every engagement has a single sponsor and an agreed plan: a weekly check-in plus deliverables at set milestones, with no surprises in either direction. Client confidentiality is absolute: each engagement is firewalled, and no client's commercial detail ever travels to another.

In AI We Trust

Research on trustworthy AI in scholarly, medical and educational publishing, built on structured interviews with senior leaders across 22 organisations and presented in London and to the IPRO board in 2026.
